Review of "Avatar"

Wed Dec 23, 2009, 8:13 PM
I do like movies. And I like scifi movies.

Here are some recent scifi movies I have seen, which I can recommend....
* WALL-E: Bravo! So many interesting things happening in this movie, and so many visual layers to quietly let you in on the workings. Also funny as anything. In a G-rated Post Apocalyptic way.
* Sleep Dealer: terrifying! But good. Not splatter-gore or Hitchcock terrifying, but scary because I felt it was tapping into economy, environmental, human conditions and asking questions. Set in the near future in Mexico, with a young man looking for work in the city.
* Moon: Not bad, I think there were a few weak points, but interesting and a good watch overall. Catch this if you want a solid movie about a man (?), a machine, a lunar station and a mystery. Atmosphere and chilly-scaryness.
* Back to the Future: What? Isn't this often re-run on TV? You haven't seen this? Oh go watch it and enjoy yourself.
* 2001: A Space Odyssey. Wait, this list isn't "recent movie" anymore, and I also saw this movie a while ago. Anyway, I remember being fascinated while I was watching it, so it's here.

Anyway, now, my review of "Avatar"....

Ahem.

Very pretty to look at.

Too bad the characters/story wasn't very interesting.

Yeah, here and there... but as a whole, it was so overboard in looking pretty and stuff, and I was sitting there not really caring whether the main character was flying around or saving the world or whatever. Uninteresting characters, or story, or writing? Whatever it was, there was an unbalance between the beautiful carefully-worked world and a story I was bored by, and it make me annoyed and kind of sad.... like biting into into cake and finding that it's stale and doesn't taste good. I could rant a lot more about it, or give my opinion on the creature-biology aspects of the world -- but if I'm going to talk movies/world-development, I'd rather talk about a movie that has world development done right with interesting story or characters.

So Immagonna talk about WALL-E again. If you want a pretty-visuals movie where the visuals are the extension of an engaging character/situation/story, see that movie. It still cracks me up (and is kind of touchingly sad) that a cockroach is the main character's pet and sidekick. And that the cockroach character survives anything, so apparently its existence isn't much of a yardstick in judging if the Earth is hospitable again..... I'm not sure if roaches are particularly resistant to radiation, I've read different articles, but it seems they can still survive quite a while (up to a month?) without their heads.

On that note, so ends my (sort of) review of "Avatar".
